Colleen's Book Recommendations

Here is the 'short' list of books I love.  I tried to put them all in order, but that's just impossible, so start with the first six and move on down the list!

Birthing From Within-- Pam England
A look at the emotional journey of labor, and how to quell your fears before the big day.

A great way to track baby's growth, as well as your own without scaring the crackers out of you like 'What to Expect' and other books can!

An Easier Childbirth-- Gayle Peterson
Another great book on dealing with head-space for labor, delivery, and the world of parenting beyond.  I recommend this for both partners, and is a great way to connect over the uncertainty of the future so you can face it more clearly, and with greater confidence.

The Birth Partner--Penny Simkin
Written by one of the most amazing women in the field of doulas, Penny gives amazing insight into the world of labor to help prepare anyone who plans on acting as labor support.

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding- La Leche League International
This is the comprehensive anthology on breastfeeding.  Read it cover to cover and save it for reference-- a great starting point and a must-have!

This is the more modern penmanship of one of Dr. Robert Bradley's nurses.   This is good for learning what to expect with labor, and how to work with your labor naturally.  This is a must have.

The Doula Book-- Klaus, Kennell, and Klaus
A short book on the work of doulas, the research studies and statistics that support the work, and what you can expect from your own doula.  This is a good book to buy for expectant parents (especially dads) who are on the fence about getting a doula.

Your Amazing Newborn-- Marshall and Phyllis Klaus
A book filled with gorgeous black and white photography of newborns, and fascinating information on newborn behavior and reflexes.

Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn--Simkin, Whalley, and Keppler
This is another birth classic by Penny and the gang.  It's a great starting point for a beginner, or the reluctant parent.

The Simple Guide to Having a Baby-- Whalley, Simkin, and Keppler
Penny does it again, with this short classic on preparing for labor and delivery.

The Baby Book-- Robert Sears
Dr. Sears' take on, well, everything!  Includes information on basics like how much Tylenol to give a baby, teething and sleeping secrets, and what to do about diaper rash.  This anthology is part of a popular series of books written on natural parenting by Dr. Sears and his wife.

The No-Cry Sleep Solution-- Elizabeth Pantley
One of the many books on getting your baby to sleep-- a shorter one, and one that is easy to start with.

'Nuff said.  :)

The Doula Guide to Birth--Ananda Lowe and Rachel Zimmerman
A newer addition to the doula book family, and full of good secrets from doula to you!

Written by Ina May, probably the most well known midwife in the country.   She has delivered thousands of babies on 'The Farm', a holistic communal living facility in Tennessee.  The book contains her secrets, her experiences, many stories, and inside secrets.

Emergency Childbirth-- Gregory White  (this may be found on used book sites, as it is out of production)
A short manual on how to deliver your baby at home, in a car, or some other unexpected place or emergency situation.  A short read, and small enough to keep in the car just in case.

Some documentaries I just can't live without are as follows*:

Born in the USA-- by Patchwork Productions.  This is a hard find, but SO worth it!

Being Dad 1 and 2-- This 2 DVD series is all about the transition into parenthood told from the male perspective, though moms will laugh and benefit from this wonderful piece of film as well!

The Dunstan Baby Language-- It's like magic!  This series will teach you to identify the pre-language sounds your baby makes in order to identify why they cry before it even begins!  I can't recommend this enough!

The Happiest Baby on the Block--Another new parent must have.  Modeled after the book, this video will teach you how to soothe your baby during the 'fourth trimester', or first few months out of the womb.

The Business of Being Born-- Ricki Lake's amazing documentary on the affect business has on the field of obstetrics, as well as showing ways to make better choices, and find better resources.  It's a must see.

Signing Time-- the best series I have seen BY FAR at teaching babies, children, or parents sign language.  Fun songs, and a whole plethora of options, including music CDs to practice to.

Baby Baby OH BABY!  Infant Massage-- What more can I say??  This is a great instructional video on how to massage and really connect with your newborn.  These skills will stay with you into their childhood, and this is a beautiful way for daddies to connect with nursing babies.

Tummy 2 Tummy-- This is a series of instructional videos on babywearing with most of the types of slings available.  It's accessible, easy to follow, and has carries for all baby sizes and skill levels.  Though I have links on my babywearing page, they really don't hold a candle to this program.

The Baby Human 1 and 2-- These are a series of 1 hour documentaries on infant development and reflexes that are fascinating and can really give us a good glimpse into the world of our babies and their development.  It's a Discovery Health Production, and great for watching in those first weeks home with baby!

The Miracle of Birth, Intimate Universe:  The Human Body-- This is a BBC production (a bit dated, but still fabulous) gestation, pregnancy, and the development of your baby through birth.
